Tuesday Night Session

Date: 12th Jan 2016

On Tuesday we had 5 people so “Tub” was speedily removed (fixings removed previously). Then we spent rest of session gently removing dirt from exposed parts. Chassis seems good except at front and back ends. We uncovered gear box Manf. plate with unit number and date of 1942.
Also found chassis number on top surface drivers side IRO  front wheel.
Chassis bottom paint black (? at manufacture) then yellow ? and drab green.
Engine seems to have been painted Red at one time (? refurbished unit?)
Brought back to No22 several bits incl. 1943 jerry can to store at home.

It seems dad has alos been busy buying bits to stick on it all obviously around the 1942-3 mark.
Purchased 1X 2 gal UK fuel can dated 1942! (£10). Not sure if this was a good price but Dad seemed happy!!!!

Dad goes Solo!!!

Date: Wed 13th & Fri 15th Jan

Don't you just love it when your at work grafting and your Dad sends you a lovely little email rubbing in the fact he is retired and has lots of free time to play! See below the email sent while Si and myself were at work!

With you and Si at work I sneeked in to the garage to tinker some more…...

Wed
Removed exhaust pipe (? 3 sections - ) and silencer….unfortunately bolt into manifold sheered despite being warmed up with gas torch.
During this realised that steel “transmission Shield” under gear box missing at purchase. The 1/32 scale model you bought me has one!
Also, on reading manual 9-1803B have noted that front springs are dissimilar so must not confuse when taken off! Left spring should be marked “L” on No 8 leaf.
Took up vac cleaner from my garage to clear up as we go. (Must make thin nozzle to get into tight corners.)

Friday.
Planned to work on removal of radiator but ran out of time as worked to improve electrics in garage.
  1. (Dutch) clothes drier tripod modified to carry 400w halogen light
  2. Additional strip light placed on ceiling beam above vehicle (great improvement)
  3. Additional double socket on R/H wall and damaged socket on back wall re-sited/replaced.
I dare say Simon didnt mind as you can now see the lights in the garage from Space!!!

Mission 2: See you 2015!!!

Mission 2: Remove more bits and hopefully remove the tub.
Date: December 29, 2015 in the PM!!!

As everyone had broken up for Christmas so what better than another night in the garage with Dad and Simon.

Before we commenced with the removal procedure it was important that we heard the Jeep run. Armed with a new battery and unleaded fuel we fired the 2.2 Willy's engine up and it went on the 2nd or 3rd attempt. Not bad for a Jeep that has been sitting for an extended period of time.

Below are the pictures of the nights efforts.
Light switch. Picture taken to ensure it is replaced in the correct hole!!

Removal of the oil filled air filter. This done to get at the bracket which holds the hand break cable in place.

Not bad for a Couple of hours. Grill off, Wings off, Wiring loom out

Another picture of the handy work!

From behind the steering wheel.
So as you can see the project is moving on fairly well after two night on it! As I explained to my students today in our cycle centre "The stripping down is the easy bit, its the putting it back together and making it work that is the real challenge!"

We are now at a stage where the tub can come out and we can really find out what condition it is in! Then it will be making lots of list and while we wait for bits, lots of cleaning!!!!

On the list at present is some wheel nuts drivers side which I believe are reverse thread. I can see an internet search coming on over the next week or so to find the relevant parts. Another option is to save the list and go into one of these JEEP mega stores with a list and see what we can do on a deal for a mass order. I'm not sure if this will be possible but we can give it a good go!

Looks like tonight might be off as Simon has just text to say he cant make it and as the Jeep is there it makes it kinda difficult! Oh well it means getting rid of Christmas for me and some more work, planning lesson for the rest of this week!!!

Slight Corrections!!!!

So I guess I cant get everything right all the time!!! Not a day after I launched the 1st post, Dad was on the email to me with corrections!!!! So here is the 1st of I am sure will be many corrections to the tale!

1)The Dinky toy models described were all U.K. vehicles (post war 2.) not American and were post war! To add to this Dad informed me that he had over 150 ( Dad and his brother started to collect them at about 10 years old (C1957) and as I said he would he now regrets selling them about 3 years ago!!! (Hate to say I told you so Dad!!).

I am sure if you have been reading this you will be glad to now have the correct information and you can once again start sleeping!!!!

Anyway the new year bought another night of tinkering! I will update today and post as soon as I have downloaded the pictures from my phone.

And so it begun!

So…. Have you ever just stopped for a moment and wondered where time has gone? One moment, you were 14 living at home and borrowing tools from the Aladdin’s cave which was your dad’s garage to make something that nearly worked and now you have moved out, created your own man cave with all the tools you just needed for the house projects and garden redesigns. When the house was finished work seemed to take centre stage and what little time you have you fill with hobbies! At this point I must say Laura my wife is very understanding as she accepts I have one or two little hobbies! Anyway. What I’m trying to say, is that all too quickly, days become weeks and weeks become years and you sometimes don’t see certain family or friends as much as perhaps you should.

When I sat back a year or so ago and analysed it, I realised that I had not spent that much quality time with my dad so it was time to make a change.

Why am I telling you this? Well I thought it was important to put some context to the project and anyone who asks “why did you do this?” I can point them to this point in the blog!!!! Anyway where was I…..?

Ah yes Dad….

To give you a little background to my Dad he is a doing man. He is the kind of person who secretly worried about retiring (so they delay it as long as possible) and then when they finally do they become just as busy doing other stuff!!! The cure for this I thought would be to find a project where we could get together regularly a father and son project! Like what you used to do when you were younger with an air fix model or the DT project you needed a hand with!

Both Dad and I have a love of the sea so with this common interest I would deploy the idea into his head and let him think on it a while. At this time, I had not too long ago finished a rebuild of a boat and a couple of other projects and was thinking about another sailing boat build, a Farr 3.7 to be exact, so a “kill two birds with one stone” idea came to me! Plan hatched, the idea bomb was dropped into dad’s head I just needed to wait for the delayed timer to go off. Well the timer was obviously faulty as it took bloody ages for the explosion and dad’s cogs to start turning but once they did, a land based project was top of dad’s idea’s list!

Dad it seemed had re-found his love of everything military. As a young boy, dad was very interested in the war and collected a vast number of dinky toy’s all WWII American (I think). There were Tanks, Tank carriers, Armoured Personnel Carriers, Jeeps etc. all in army colours. Recently he had started to go to enactments such as war and peace, my brother in law was just finishing off a mark 1 VW Golf in his double garage and it must have been at this point the thought bomb I had placed inside his head a number of months ago went off and boom Dad wanted to bring back to life a WWII American Willy’s Jeep and it just so happened a friend of my dads who is insanely fanatical about military vehicles knew of one for sale!

To cut a long and not so interesting part of the story short, the Jeep was bought and transported to Dad's for a while as the VW was still in the workshop (sorry secret bunker). The 1st job was to then get if from Dad's to the secret location.

Mission 1:
Transport from Dad's house to the workshop
Date: December 19,2015

This was a surprisingly easy task when you know someone with a low loader!! Job done!

Below are the first picture of the beast (with all the battle scars and rust!).

Picture 1: Dad with the new Toy having his 1st drive (Well Free wheel!)

Pictures 2: Nearly there!

Task 1: Wash and brush up!
Equipment: Jet wash, water.

Picture 3: View from inside the secret bunker (AKA The Garage)

Now all the loose mud was taken off which had done a fairly good job of trying to hide some of the more obvious shonkey bodge jobs! On the positive note not too much obvious rust to worry about (So Simon my brother in law said). So all in all a good platform to start from!

So now all we have to do is set an evening when we would meet (Dad Simon and myself)

So I will keep you posted with progress and regular pictures for that odd 5 minutes you find (yeah right!!!)
